Ontario's climate is hard on exterior wood. Decks go from freezing temperatures to summer heat and humidity, with ice and snow in between. The choice between paint and stain determines not just how your deck looks but how long the finish lasts and how much work it is to maintain. For most Ontario decks, stain is the better long-term choice.

The case for stain
Stain penetrates into the wood fibres rather than forming a film on top of the surface. This matters in Ontario's freeze-thaw climate because wood expands and contracts as temperatures cycle. A penetrating stain moves with the wood; a surface coating (like paint) eventually cracks and peels as the wood moves beneath it.
Semi-transparent stains preserve the wood grain and allow moisture to escape naturally — which is important because wood absorbs moisture from rain and morning dew regardless of what's on it. Solid stains provide more colour and UV protection but behave more like paint on the surface.
Advantages of stain
- Works with wood movement rather than against it
- Fails gracefully — fades rather than peels
- Easy to maintain: clean and reapply on top of existing stain
- Preserves the natural look of wood grain (semi-transparent)
- Better for Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles
The case for paint
Deck paint makes sense in a few specific situations:
- The wood is in poor condition — paint hides cracks, stains, and grey weathered wood better than semi-transparent stain
- You want a specific colour — paint gives you full colour control; stain is limited to tinted wood tones
- Pressure-treated pine that won't accept stain well — some pressure-treated lumber is dense enough that stain doesn't penetrate as well as on cedar or natural wood
Disadvantages of paint
- Peels and flakes when it fails, which is inevitable in Ontario
- Prevents future staining — you can't stain over paint
- Requires more aggressive prep and stripping at renewal time
Cost comparison
| Option | Typical cost (average deck, Toronto) | Lifespan on horizontal surfaces |
|---|---|---|
| Deck stain (semi-transparent) | $600 – $1,800 | 2 – 4 years |
| Deck stain (solid) | $800 – $2,200 | 3 – 5 years |
| Deck paint | $900 – $2,500 | 3 – 5 years (peels at end) |
The verdict for Ontario
For a new deck or one that has been previously stained, stain is the right choice for Ontario's climate. For a previously painted deck, you're committed to paint unless you strip it — and stripping is a significant project in itself.
