Most painting projects involve at least some drywall repair — a nail hole here, a door-handle dent there, or years of small cracks that appeared as a Toronto home settled. Understanding what these repairs cost, and why, helps you budget accurately before requesting a quote.

Drywall repair cost ranges in Toronto (2026)
| Repair type | Typical cost (labour + materials) |
|---|---|
| Nail holes and minor cracks (up to 10 per wall) | $150 – $300 |
| Small hole repair (1–3 inches) | $200 – $400 |
| Medium hole repair (3–6 inches) | $300 – $600 |
| Large hole or section replacement | $500 – $1,200 |
| Water damage repair (dry, source fixed) | $400 – $1,500+ |
| Full room skim coat | $800 – $2,500 |
These prices include patching, priming, and painting to match the existing wall. Prices rise when there are multiple access constraints, high ceilings, or when the existing finish is textured and needs to be matched.
What's included in drywall repair
A properly executed drywall repair involves several steps that are easy to shortcut but impossible to hide once the paint dries:
- Cutting out damaged material cleanly and installing backing if needed
- Applying joint compound in multiple thin coats (usually three)
- Sanding smooth between coats and after the final coat
- Priming with a high-hide or stain-blocking primer
- Painting with the correct sheen to match the surrounding wall
Matching an existing painted surface is one of the more difficult aspects of repair work. Paint colour fades over time, and even the same colour from the same can can look different when applied to a small patch versus the full wall. We typically recommend painting the entire wall rather than spot-patching for the best result.
Water damage repairs cost more
If your drywall has water damage — brown staining, soft or crumbling material, or bubbling paint — the repair is more involved. The moisture source must be fixed first (a roof leak, plumbing issue, or bathroom condensation problem). Drywall must be fully dried before repairs begin, which sometimes takes days with a dehumidifier. The damaged paper facing often needs to be replaced, and stain-blocking primer is mandatory to prevent the brown stain from bleeding back through.
Skim coats: the full-room refresh
Older Toronto homes sometimes have walls with years of accumulated patches, nail holes, and surface damage that make a standard repaint look worse, not better. A full skim coat — applying a thin layer of joint compound over the entire wall surface — levels everything out and gives you a factory-smooth finish before painting.
It's more expensive than a standard repaint but far less expensive than replacing the drywall. For homes with plaster walls (common in pre-1960s Toronto homes), a skim coat is often the best option to modernize the surface without a full gut renovation.
Bundling repairs with a full repaint
The most cost-effective time to address drywall damage is when you're already painting. We include minor patch repairs (nail holes, hairline cracks) in every interior painting project at no extra charge. Larger repairs are scoped separately but priced efficiently when done as part of the same visit.
Submit photos of your walls through our online quote form and we'll assess the repair scope along with the painting. Our drywall repair and installation service covers everything from small patches to full panel replacement. We work across Toronto and the GTA.
